Dr. Joel S. Edman, DSc, FACN, CNS

Dr. Edman is the Associate Research Director for the Brind Center, and his research interests focus on core medical issues such as hypoglycemia/insulin resistance, food intolerance, anti-inflammatory nutritional effects, and compliance to nutrition and lifestyle programs. Dr. Edman is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University.

He received his master’s degree in clinical nutrition from Drexel University and his doctorate in nutritional sciences from Boston University. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS). Dr. Edman brings a strong combination of education, clinical experience, research experience and commitment to his work with patients and colleagues.

Dr. Edman is a clinical nutritionist and nutritional consultant. In addition to seeing patients at the Media Wellness Center, his current primary position is Director of Integrative Nutrition at the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine. He has over 18 years of experience in clinical nutrition, with particular expertise in therapeutic application of dietary guidelines and nutritional supplements within the context of an integrative medical or complementary and alternative medical (CAM) approach to healthcare.

Dr. Edman has developed diet and lifestyle programs for patients with a wide range of medical issues, such as cancer, metabolic syndrome (overweight and obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.), neuropsychiatric disorders (depression, fatigue, poor memory, MS, Parkinson’s Disease, etc.) and gastrointestinal disorders (IBS, reflux, IBD, etc.). His consultations focus on specific and therapeutic dietary plans that are individually tailored to the unique needs and characteristics of the patient. This includes a meal and snack plan, supportive recommendations and resources, and a range of other helpful suggestions.
